The Spirit of Luminox: Honouring Everyday Heros in SG60
Resilience. Endurance. Purpose. These are the values that define not only Luminox watches, but also the nation we call home—and the individuals who keep its spirit alive. As Singapore celebrates its 60th year of independence, Luminox pays tribute to the quiet strength and unwavering resolve of local heroes who serve not with headlines, but with heart.
Built to perform in the toughest conditions, Luminox timepieces have long been trusted by elite military units, divers, and explorers. Yet beyond tactical missions and extreme adventures, Luminox champions another kind of hero— those who make an impact in everyday life.
As part of the Luminox Everyday Hero initiative, we spotlight Andrew Ong, a Singaporean community advocate whose journey of second chances, personal transformation, and social impact reflects the very spirit we honour this National Day. He exemplifies the strength of character and deep commitment to others that define what it means to be an everyday hero.
A Past Rewritten
Andrew Ong is no stranger to hardship. A troubled adolescence led him to street gangs and ultimately incarceration at the age of 18. Life behind bars was dehumanizing and lonely, but it was after his release—and a subsequent relapse into drug abuse—that Andrew experienced a turning point. Following a drug overdose and being fired from his job, he realized how far he had strayed from who he wanted to be. That was the moment he decided to reclaim his life.
Break The Cycle: From Health to Hope
The road to reintegration was far from easy. Andrew faced rejection, social stigma, and the challenge of rebuilding his life from scratch. He turned to the F&B industry and then pursued education, eventually earning a degree in communications and finding purpose in both social work and business. Yet, a personal health scare in 2019 would inspire Andrew to take a new path—one that blended personal healing with public service.
That year, Andrew founded Break The Cycle, a cycling initiative that supports ex-offenders in reintegration journey health, discipline, and community. What began as a way to improve his physical well-being evolved into a mission-driven movement. Cycling became more than a sport—it became a vehicle for growth, accountability, and hope.
Through Break The Cycle, Andrew and his team offer a supportive, non-judgmental environment where ex-offenders are welcomed and celebrated. “We treat them as VIPs,” Andrew shares. “Because they rarely get to hear that they matter.” One such success story includes a former halfway house resident who, after completing a bike mechanic course, secured full-time employment—proof that belief and support can truly open doors.
As Singapore marks 60 years of independence, stories like Andrew’s stand as powerful reminders of how far we’ve come—not just in building a nation, but in cultivating a society that uplifts, empowers, and embraces second chances.
Everesting For Second Chances
In June 2025, Andrew pushed his advocacy to new heights—literally—by completing the Everesting challenge: 220 loops up Mount Faber, replicating the elevation of Mount Everest (8,848m). The feat was part of Everesting for Second Chances, a campaign organised by HCSA Community Services to raise awareness about the uphill battle ex-offenders face when reintegrating into society.
It was one of several endurance events Andrew has taken on to stand in solidarity with those navigating this difficult path. “Like climbing Everest, the reintegration journey for an ex-offender is long, lonely, and filled with obstacles. I wanted to show them they’re not alone,” he shares.
His climb is not just symbolic of individual perseverance—it reflects the national spirit of SG60: determined, inclusive, and always moving forward, no matter how steep the climb.
A Watch That Means More
For the challenge and in daily life, Andrew wears the Luminox Pacific Diver Chronograph 3145. “I chose the yellow variant because it reflects the Yellow Ribbon Project and the spirit of second chances,” Andrew explains. “The watch is sturdy, dependable, and ready for anything—just like the people we support.”
More than a bold color choice, the yellow cut-to-fit strap is a beacon of hope and a declaration of purpose—a nod to the Yellow Ribbon Project, Singapore’s national initiative supporting second chances for ex-offenders. Launched in 2004, the Yellow Ribbon Project fosters acceptance and reintegration by raising awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging community support for individuals rebuilding their lives after incarceration.
The Pacific Diver Chronograph 3145 features a 44mm stainless steel case, CARBONOX™ unidirectional rotating bezel, and water resistance up to 200 meters—making it rugged enough for any adventure and reliable for everyday wear. Powered by a Swiss-made quartz movement, it includes a chronograph function, date display at 4 o’clock, and Luminox Light Technology (LLT) that ensures visibility in low light for up to 25 years.
Whether navigating wet terrain, night rides, or harsh elements, this timepiece echoes Andrew’s resilience and unwavering mission.
Everyday Acts, Extraordinary Impact
Andrew Ong’s life and leadership embody the enduring qualities of Luminox watches: performance under pressure, reliability in adversity, and a steadfast commitment to moving forward. While his work may not always make headlines, its impact is deeply felt by those he serves. As Singapore celebrates its heritage and looks toward the future this SG60, Andrew reminds us that heroism isn’t defined by grand gestures, but by the quiet, consistent acts of care that build stronger communities and a more compassionate nation.
“To me, being an everyday hero is about the small things,” he says. “Checking in when someone misses a ride. Waiting when someone falls behind. Those little acts of kindness—that’s what people remember.”
Looking ahead, Andrew is advocating for policy reforms, including removing the requirement for ex-offenders to declare their criminal records on job applications. By addressing these barriers, he hopes to pave a smoother path for those seeking a second chance. For Break The Cycle, the goal remains unchanged: to pedal forward together, empowering transformation through community, one ride at a time.
Luminox honours everyday heroes like Andrew Ong—individuals who serve with humility, lead with heart, and act with courage. Whether he’s championing fair employment practices or waiting for a teammate on a hill climb, Andrew reflects the true essence of being Singapore Strong—resilient, compassionate, and future-ready. His story is a powerful reminder that real strength lies not only in endurance or ability, but in the quiet conviction to uplift others, even when the road is steep.
Just like the watches he wears, Andrew represents strength, precision, and unwavering purpose. This SG60, we look forward by honouring those who keep us grounded.
