Everyday Heroes Are All Around Us
At Luminox Australia, we believe heroism isn't always found on the world's highest peaks.
More often, it's found in the quiet decisions we make every day, to keep going when things get tough, to support the people around us, to ask for help when we need it, or simply to take the next step forward.
That's why we're proud to recognise Oliver Foran as a Luminox Australia Everyday Hero.
An Australian adventurer, mountaineer, keynote speaker and youth mental health advocate, Oliver recently became the first person to travel entirely under human power from sea level to the summit of Mount Everest. But what makes his story inspiring isn't the world record, it's the purpose behind it.
Driven to raise awareness and funds for youth mental health, Oliver transformed one of the world's toughest endurance challenges into a journey of resilience, hope and community.
We caught up with Oliver to learn more about the adventure, the lessons he learnt along the way and what it really means to be an Everyday Hero.
From Sea Level to the Top of the World
Oliver's dream of climbing Everest began after summiting Ama Dablam in Nepal.
"Standing on the summit, the only mountain I could see was Everest. I knew I wanted to climb it, but I wanted to earn every step."
Instead of flying into Base Camp like most climbers, Oliver set himself an even greater challenge: travelling entirely under human power from sea level at the Bay of Bengal to the summit of Everest.
The journey saw him cycle more than 1,150 kilometres through India and Nepal in temperatures exceeding 40°C, before trekking through the Himalayas to Everest Base Camp and eventually reaching the summit. Fifty days later, he'd achieved a new world record.
"Starting at sea level gave me a true appreciation of Everest's scale. We experienced everything—from busy roads and intense heat to glaciers and the highest point on Earth."
Climbing for Young Minds
The expedition was never just about breaking records.
After losing his mum to brain cancer as a teenager and later facing his own mental health challenges, Oliver partnered with Youturn to launch Climbing for Young Minds, raising funds for youth mental health programs.
"I want young people to know they don't have to face difficult periods alone. Asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness."
The campaign raised almost $80,000 and reached millions of Australians, but for Oliver, the greatest success came from hearing people say the journey inspired them to speak up or seek help.
"Extraordinary outcomes are built through ordinary decisions. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply take the next step."
The Power of "Quit Tomorrow"
The expedition wasn't without setbacks.
There were landslides, altitude sickness, extreme cold, an avalanche reaching camp and more than 70 hours awake during the final summit push.
There were also moments when Oliver questioned whether he could continue.
"During one 133-kilometre ride in 42-degree heat, I broke down emotionally. Everest felt impossibly far away."
That's when his personal mantra became the mindset that carried him to the summit.
Go One More Day. Quit Tomorrow.
"It doesn't mean pushing recklessly. It means allowing yourself to feel what you're feeling, remembering why you started and then making the next responsible decision."
Instead of focusing on the summit, Oliver focused on the next hour—or sometimes simply the next step.
What Makes an Everyday Hero?
Despite his incredible achievement, Oliver is quick to say he doesn't see himself as a hero.
"An everyday hero isn't necessarily someone who climbs Everest. It's someone who shows up for others, stands back up after a difficult period and keeps moving forward."
It's a perspective that perfectly reflects what the Luminox Everyday Hero program is all about, recognising resilience, courage and determination in all forms.
Built for Every Challenge
Whether cycling across India or climbing through the death zone on Everest, dependable equipment played an important role.
"Reliable timekeeping helped us manage pacing, nutrition, hydration and critical climbing schedules. On Everest, where much of the climbing happens in darkness and freezing temperatures, having a dependable watch becomes a genuine safety tool."
For Oliver, Luminox's values of adventure, endurance and resilience naturally align with his own approach.
"Adventure is about stepping into the unknown with preparation and respect. Resilience isn't simply refusing to quit—sometimes it's knowing when to adapt so you can keep moving forward."
What's Next?
Oliver's Everest achievement is just the beginning.
His next mission is to complete the Seven Summits from Sea Level, travelling entirely under human power from the coastline to the highest mountain on every continent, beginning with Mount Kilimanjaro.
Alongside future expeditions, he'll continue supporting Youturn and sharing his message with schools, businesses and communities.
"I don't want everyone to climb mountains. I want people to believe they can face whatever mountain is in front of them."
At Luminox Australia, we're proud to celebrate people like Oliver, individuals who inspire others not just through extraordinary achievements, but through courage, purpose and the determination to keep moving forward.
Because everyday heroes really are all around us.
